Moderated by Lukas Feireiss

As part of the current exhibition Thresholds. Limits of Space BNKR invites to a lecture by Theo Deutinger. Theo Deutinger is an architect, writer and designer of socio-cultural maps and studies. He is founder and head of TD, an office that combines architecture with research, visualization and conceptual thinking in all scale levels from global planning, urban master plans, architecture to graphical and journalistic work.

Deutinger’s recent book Handbook of Tyranny (Lars Müller Publishers, 2018) portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence—they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe.

Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. Against the backdrop of the current exhibition at BNKR Thresholds. Limits of Space which explores practices of transgressing and surmounting spatial borders in architecture and the built environment in the contemporary arts, Deutinger’s talk is of special significance.

Under the title SPACE IS THE PLACE the upcoming exhibition cycle 2018-2019 (September 2018 – July 2019) conceived by Berlin-based curator Lukas Feireiss is dedicated to the artistic exploration of space. Through numerous events, solo and group exhibitions as well as an international symposium, SPACE IS THE PLACE investigates the experience, imagination and design of space in theory and practice together with artists, architects, musicians and dancers but also philosophers and scientists.
