SPACE IS THE PLACE
Current Reflections on Art and Architecture

On the occasion of BNKR’s exhibition program SPACE IS THE PLACE, curated by Lukas Feireiss, Spector Books Leipzig published the eponymous book in July 2020. The publication does not only document all exhibitions and events realized for BNKR’s aboveground bunker between September 2018 and July 2019 but provides also the opportunity to read extensively about the symposium SPACE IS THE PLACE which took place during preview days of the Venice art biennal in May 2019.

As the book pursues the specific intention of the curatorial work at BNKR it explores space and place as topics of playful investigation and serious reflection. Together with artists, designers, architects, curators and theoreticians, it questions the experience, imagination and design of spaces and places in theory and practice.

With contributions by Franz Xaver Baier, Clemens Behr, Nuotama Bodomo, Sam Chermayeff, Beatriz Colomina, Caroline Corbasson, Theo Deutinger, Alicja Kwade, Jeewi Lee, Wermke Leinkauf, Michael Najjar, Bruce Nauman, Tom Pall, Tobias Prüwer, Tom Sachs, Michael Sailstorfer, Julius von Bismarck, Raul Walch, Olafur Eliasson, Nahum and many more.

Lukas Feireiss works as a curator, writer and art director in the international mediation of contemporary cultural reflexivity beyond disciplinary boundaries.

WTHM—Büro für Gestaltung / Floyd E. Schulze is a Berlin based creative studio visualizing contemporary culture. The studio delivers creative direction, design, and visual strategies.

Spector Books’ publishing practice is settled squarely in the intersection of art, theory, and design. Based in Leipzig, Germany, the publishing house explores the possibilities offered by an active exchange between all parties involved in the book production process: artists, authors, book designers, lithographers, printers and bookbinders.

The book SPACE IS THE PLACE is available online at Spector Books.

The first edition of the program’s publication series does not only document realized projects at BNKR but features the Mandala/Mandela-Effect: “Mandela-Effect” refers to collectively false memories of historical facts while the “Mandala-Effect” refers to the false remembering of the Mandela-Effect. This way, ideas, which would make absolute sense in the context of the program but could not be realized, will be inscribed into the collective memory of Stop making sense, it‘s as good as its gets.

Replica Books
Orientteppiche

Replica Books is a publishing house founded by the architectural office Something Fantastic. Replica Books publishes out-of-print books that should still be available to the public in a simple and affordable way.

The first book to be published in the series, “Orientteppiche”, is a constant reference at Something Fantastic because of the graphic design of  the carpet depictions. The way they are cut and positioned on the page holds a beauty telling of the designer’s  − or editor’s − ambition to show each carpet the way it seemed best to her or him, with disregard to graphical conventions.
